Matheson says phone meetings have drawn 10,000

0 Comments | Deseret News (Salt Lake City), Nov 21, 2009 | by Lee Davidson Deseret News

“Telephone town hall meetings” may be blasted by those who want to see their congressman face-to-face, but Rep. Jim Matheson, D- Utah, says 10,000 Utahns have participated in the 21 such telephone meetings he’s held so far this year.

“Hearing from Utahns has always been a top priority for me in this job,” he said in announcing Friday that he went over the 10,000- person mark. In contrast, he said old-fashioned town hall meetings would attract only a few dozen people at a time.

But this summer when health care reform debate was hot, some groups nationally complained that he and others were ducking face- to-face confrontation with voters who may not like their stands. One group of about 150 people organized to take a town hall meeting to Matheson with a protest on his route to a fundraising dinner.

Matheson said he actually quit holding traditional town hall meetings about two years ago because of low attendance. He said phone meetings allow him to dial to thousands of homes, let them decide whether to listen and how long, and ask questions.

“It makes me a better representative,” he said. “It’s also a way for me to learn about the good ideas that my constituents have about solving problems.”

Reps. Jason Chaffetz and Rob Bishop, both R-Utah, are the only members of the Utah delegation who continue to hold traditional town hall meetings

Bad breath Midlands men; HEALTH

0 Comments | Birmingham Post (England), The, Jan 22, 2009

Men have dirtier teeth than women and those in the Midlands have the country’s worst breath, according to a report by The Cosmetic Dentistry Guide.

Women from London and south-east England have the most sparkling smiles, while fewer than one man in five nationwide brushed twice a day.

Meanwhile, 76 per cent of the 1,000polled admitted they failed to replace their toothbrush regularly, using themuntil they were worn down. Eight out of 10 said they stuck to the same brand of toothpaste, regardless of price, and most saw mouthwash simply as a quick remedy for bad breath, rather than part of a daily routine.

Five steps to a fresh mouth are brushing at least twice a day, using the right toothbrush, flossing regularly, mouthwash and using a good quality toothpaste, not simply a favourite flavour.

Prime Power Application in the Construction and Utilities Sectors Bolster Demand Levels in the APAC Power Rental Markets, Finds Frost & Sullivan

PR Newswire, Nov 11, 2009

SINGAPORE, Nov. 11 /PRNewswire/ — The APAC rent generator power rental market is exhibiting strong potential for growth owing to the slump in ownership demand for generator sets, and the rising demand for prime power applications from the utilities and construction sector. The lack of reliable power supply from the utility grid to the vast majority of islands in the region has kept market prospects upbeat. In addition, rental power units are used for peak shaving power requirements during extreme climatic conditions. Easy availability as well as accessibility of the diesel power rental equipment enables end users to use rental power to meet their short-term requirements, significantly reducing capital expenditure.

New analysis from Frost & Sullivan (http://www.energy.frost.com/), APAC Power Rental Markets, finds that market earned revenues of over $221.2 million in 2008 and estimates this to reach $326.2 million in 2015.

“The trend of the market indicates sustained demand from countries such as Philippines, Indonesia, and Vietnam because of the inadequate power infrastructure as well as from Australia due to the difficulty of extending the utility grid in remote areas,” says Frost & Sullivan Industry Analyst Suchitra Sriram
